DIY HVAC Maintenance: Things You Can Do Yourself

Basic Cleaning

Replace the Filter

Worker cleaning industrial equipment with high-pressure water hose.

In the summer, you can always take a water hose outside to clean your air conditioner by spraying it down. This process involves washing the coils from top to bottom, ensuring that all airflow obstructions are cleared out. Regular HVAC maintenance like this will help the compressor do its job efficiently and extend its life. Don't forget to replace the air filter regularly for optimal performance.

If you can reach your home's return air filter and replace it without getting hurt, then I’d suggest going to Home Depot, ACE, or Lowe's to grab a filter the same size as the one you have now. For optimal HVAC maintenance, remember to replace the air filter every three months to ensure a clean air conditioner.

Heating and Cooling issues?

If you find that your HVAC system is not working in heating or cooling mode, you might want to check your breaker panel. If you feel comfortable doing so, turn the breakers for your HVAC off for 30 seconds and then turn them back on. After that, test the system again. If it still doesn't work, it may be time to consider HVAC maintenance. Additionally, ensure you have a clean air conditioner and that you regularly replace the air filter, as these factors can affect performance. If issues persist, call a local heating and air company for further assistance.

Remember to check your thermostat batteries, as a common issue is that they are often out of sight and out of mind, leading to the need to replace them. These are typically AA batteries. Additionally, it's important to maintain your HVAC system by regularly replacing the air filter and ensuring you clean your air conditioner to keep everything running smoothly.

Overgrown weeds and trash surround an outdoor air conditioning unit by a house.

Keeping the outside of your air conditioner clean is a significant step in effective HVAC maintenance. Not only is it essential to spray out the coil, but you should also remove weeds and other items that obstruct airflow. Typically, you need at least 8 inches of space around the unit to ensure it operates efficiently. Additionally, don't forget to regularly replace the air filter to maintain optimal performance.
